Quilt for All Seasons, A Quilt for All Seasons, AChris Edmonds has a special admiration for the pioneer women whose designs are the historical foundation of a uniquely American art form--the patchwork quilt. Quiltmakers Gift, The Quiltmakers Gift, TheAs intricately worked as a patchwork quilt, de Marckens (Born to Pull) fanciful watercolors are the highlight of this somewhat pedestrian fable. Rich but dissatisfied, a king demands a quilt from a gifted quiltmaker, but she refuses unless he gives away all his material possessions. The irate monarch twice attempts to punish her but both times she foils him. Finally he agrees to her demand, growing progressively happier with each thing that he gives away. Brumbeaus overlong tale treads a well-worn trail here, hampered by bursts of overwrought prose ("the kings great sunny laugh made green apples fall and flowers turn his way"). The artwork achieves a dizzying, quilted look with lush full-page illustrations in cotton-candy colors sharing a spread with saucy vignettes; "the king could not sleep" for instance, inspires a droll four-panel peek at the restless fellow tossing and turning in bed. De Marcken pays homage at every turn to the quiltmakers craft. Each section of text appears on a plain cream "block" with stitching around the edges, and the endpapers sport an array of labeled quilt patterns. | Jeff Brumbeau, Gail de Marcken |

Color for Quilters Color for QuiltersColor in quilts, as in all art, is what strikes the viewer first. It is the impact of a quilt's colors that attracts or repels us, that leads us to examine other elements of the quilt. the stitching maybe exquisite and the design flawless, but unless the colors are compelling, the quilt fails to command our attention.

Color from the Heart Color from the HeartFrom Library Journal Many books on color theory and color in quilts fail to capture the interest of quilters by dwelling on technical explanations of color theory and ignoring the intuitive choice of color. In contrast, Perry admits gladly that despite her training as a painter and her strong technical background in color theory, she normally chooses colors with the heart, not the intellect. She emphasizes a hands-on approach to working with color by employing a series of lessons to illustrate seven effective and pleasing methods for choosing colors and fabrics for quiltmaking. In the process of working through each lesson, the reader learns color theory in small doses while making a small, illustrative wall hanging-size quilt. Seven quilts later, the reader knows how to incorporate myriad fabrics into one small quilt; how to pick a quilt color scheme based on decorative objects, photos, or paintings; and how best to use several tints, tones, and shades of each color in a single quilt. A good choice for all quilting collections. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.
Book Description Stressing how to give equal importance to color and fabric personality, the projects in this book use simple combinations of squares and triangles for striking results. Diverse lessons show how to incorporate forty unrelated fabrics in one small quilt; how to make a two-color quilt, adding enrichment colors without changing the integrity of the original scheme; how to sew a nine-patch quilt following easy techniques artists use in paintings; how to plan a quilt color scheme inspired by a favorite photo, painting, or decorative object. | Gai Perry |

Escher, Jinny Beyer introduces quilters to the fascinating world of symmetry and then clearly shows how to experiment with shapes and images to create sensational, tessellating designs. Easy Pieces Easy PiecesAmazon reader's review: I bought this book to learn more about designing quilts. Margaret Miller encourages the reader to play with two basic geometric shapes. This frees up the beginner from being overwhelmed by complicated construction techniques and able to play with quilt design. The quilts selected for inclusion in this volume also have a great deal of motion built into the design, so it gives the reader a chance to study how this is done. If you want to learn more about design, color, and motion of quilts--this is an excellent resource. Color examples that are my favorites include Marty Kutz's "Fall Frost" (pg. 60),Grace Crocker's "Quilt Virus"(pg. 66), Maureen Roy's "Sisters"(pg. 100), and Nancy Meyer's "The Inside Story."(pg. 51). All of the examples in this book are contemporary style quilts. Mary Cox the accidental quilter

Easy Quilts West Easy Quilts WestThese extraordinary quilt blocks explore themes and images never before encountered in quilts. Some celebrate typically American subjects like the Cadillac and the Charleston, the Indianapolis 500 and Radio City Music Hall. Others explore Japanese images like the rolling waves of a Hokusai ocean or the delicate rituals of the cherry blossom festival. All of them use surprising approaches to color, design, and fabric that will stimulate and inspire any quilter. | Kumiko Sudo |

Fabric Postcards Fabric PostcardsThe germ of the idea of postcards as quilts began when the author experimented with fabric triptychs, in which antique postcards were superimposed on pieced fabric surfaces. The concept expanded from using postcards as collage elements to actually making a postcard with fabric. And what a challenge it is! An internationally recognized instructor, Warren has worked closely with quilters in Japan, and many of her samples depict Japanese locations, landscapes, and themes, along with regions in the U.S. Basic quilting skills are assumed; taught with thoroughness are value, color, and design skills. Paper postcards old and new are shown along with the finished fabric cards, always with ample discussion about each card's evolution and why certain fabric or color was chosen. Warren actually suggests that the fabric cards can be mailed, but this is a risk few would take, knowing the current reputation of the Postal Service! She does urge that the back of the postcard be addressed and decorated with postal embellishments to heighten the "official" quality of the finished work. This is a groundbreaking book for those who seek a guide for capturing the landscape and natural world in their work. Iva Freeman | Judi Warren |

Fat Quarter Friendly Fat Quarter FriendlyAmazon reader review: Do not get this book if: 1) You are a beginning beginner (as opposed to advanced beginner). 2) You do not have a VERY large stash of fat quarters and/or eighths. 3) You want patterns that will use fat quarters, but allow some creativity in terms of color. This is a very well-done book, but I feel a little misled and have to return or resell the book. I expected a book more like M'liss Rae Hawley's "Fat Quarter Quilts," which contains instructions for quilts requiring 6 fat quarters, plus background and border material. That's what I get for making assumptions. Most patterns in this book require 20+ fat quarters and/or fat eighths. I'm a beginning quilter and just don't have that kind of stash yet. To me, that's a scrap quilt, which has its value, but just isn't what I'm looking for right now. I feel that this book is marketed in a misleading way by suggesting you can make these quilts from fat quarter bundles (which usually come bundled, where I live, in five or six quarters, not twenty or more!). I also felt restricted by the patterns. The instructions are for mimicking as closely as possible the quilt displayed in the photos with each pattern. The book does not encourage you to personalize with your own color designs. So, I don't really see how people can use quarters from their stash; they'd have to go out and buy the called-for colors and values, solids and prints. Hawley's book is much more flexible here. The last reason this book wasn't for me is that, again, I am a beginning quilter, and some of these patterns are way too advanced for me. There are a few that look suitable for a beginner, but I wouldn't recommend anyone who's brand new to quilting to start here. This is not the book's fault. It does not claim to be for beginners. It was just another disadvantage for me, personally. However, I will say that the photos are gorgeous. There is one picture of each quilt draped artfully and another of it laying flat. There are 30 patterns for a nice variety. They make use of not only fat quarters, but also fat eighths. The instructions seem clear, though I haven't actually tried to make any of these quilts. There are sections in the back on making labels, mitering corners, attaching borders, making bindings, applique, etc. In all, it's a good book, but I thought others should be aware of the pitfalls I encountered. I can see that, for some, however, this would be the perfect book. | Fons & Porter |

Great American Quilts - 1993 Great American Quilts - 1993Amazon Review: I have been collecting these Great America Quilt books since the very beginning. They are highly treasured among the quilt books I own. I enjoy the variety of quilts from first quilts to quilts from very experienced quilt makers. They are all beautiful photographed and the color just leaps out from the pages. Patterns are included for most and sometimes actually quilting motifs are included. What I love most about this book is that it covers a range of quilters all over the country. I enjoy seeing the photographs of each quilter, but most of all I enjoy reading the stories as to how they began quilting or what inspired that particular pattern or the history behind the quilt. My particular favorite are quilts begun a generation(s) before and finally ended up being finished by the current generation. Can you imagine what treasures those quilts are? Also included in this book are quilts done by Bee Quilters. This book is a wonderful way to become inspired for your next project or just enjoy the quilts for 1993. | Sandra L. O'Brien |

From Booklist Needles and threads. Sounds basic. Not in today's quilt-driven sewing market. Any fabric or sewing store sports an array of colored threads--metallic, striped, variegated, polyester, ribbons, silk, nylon, rayon, or cotton. Decorative threads in this book are used for machine quilting; given the expert direction of these experienced teachers, even the novice can produce gorgeous work. Beginning with a useful guide to "know[ing] your sewing machine," then quickly taking the reader on to 10 exercises producing a variety of results, the authors build the quilter's confidence with practice sessions and set-up charts covering tension, bobbin threads, and the correct foot and needle to use. The text is liberally sprinkled with a gallery of many of North American quilters' best garments and wall hangings. Libraries purchasing this title should be aware of two other related and extraordinary books: Threadplay (1997), by Libby Lehman, whose work is primarily geometric designs, and Thread Magic (1997), by Ellen Anne Eddy, who concentrates on the natural world. It includes 12 different blocks to create a lovely sampler quilt. Each block has a little descriptive paragraph about its name, and there are a few recipes in the book too. Quick Country Quilts Quick Country QuiltsAmazon review: With the rising popularity of quilting, there is a demand for both inspirational and instructional quilting books. Here, Mumm sets aside needle for pen to advocate her techniques and designs. Promoting the use of a rotary cutter and mat over scissors, she tries to simplify cutting and assembly. The designs are fresh and cute, but the dimensions are for wall display only. Conversions for enlarging patterns are tucked away in the introduction. The terminology used and other assumptions make this book a little complicated for a beginner, despite the author's tables of instructions and other shortcuts. Though the designs may be inspirational, the instructions are still complicated. A supplementary purchase for large public libraries only. - Karen Ellis, Victoria P . L . , Tex. | Debbie Mumm |

Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts Quick Rotary Cutter QuiltsI love to quilt. I love patterns that do not have applique, curved seams, or take a tremendous amount of time and effort. I have a full time night nurse job and like projects that look great and are different and entertaining. This book fulfills all the above. The paterns are easy, even for the beginning quilter and look great. The topics are fun and unusual. Ms Bono has let us tap into her very creative mind with patterns that bring smiles to the quiltist as well as those who see the finished projects. There's a lot of variety here. This is well worth adding to your library. Beverly Harms | Pam Bono Designs |

Quilt Savvy One-Patch Scrap Quilts Quilt Savvy One-Patch Scrap QuiltsAmazon review: Pat Yamin's new book is a treasure for any quilter who wants to be able to make a quilt with minimal stress. She shows you how to use one template to make a variety of beautiful quilts. There are lots of color pictures that show traditional patterns made in todays colorful fabrics. Of course, the quilts would be lovely in more traditional fabrics, too. This is a great book for beginners. However, the more advanced quilter will be challenged, too. I can hardly wait to get started on some one-patch quilts of my own.

Quilters Catalog, The Quilters Catalog, TheAmazon reviews: Meg sent me a copy of her book the other day, The Quilter's Catalog: A Comprehensive Resource Guide, and I'm here to tell you that it's absolutely, mind bogglingly, out of this world. The sheer volume of work that this former Wall Street Journal reporter put into this guide is astonishing and I defy any quilter (or non-quilter for that matter) to diss it. Along with more than several step-by-step projects, Meg goes into depth on the issues and products we want to know about – longarms, fabric dyeing, new vs. old techniques, up-to-the minute quilting tools, and interviews with the top quilting personalities known today (Well, not me but her book was written before we met. How's that for luck?). Honestly, if you have a quilt related question, it's answered in this book. Listen to this. The book's retail price is an astonishing $17.95 ( www.amazon.com is selling it for $12.21!) making it the very best value of any current quilt related book on the market today. How could you possibly pass it up? Kids, this is huge and I assure you that The Quilter's Catalog will be my bedside and sewing room reading for years to come! —Mark Lipinski, Quilter's Home Magazine (Mark Lipinski Quilter's Home Magazine )
Review Meg Cox's scrapbag of lessons and lore takes the mystery out of quilting while leaving the mystique. The Quilt Catalog is an essential companion for quilters and quilt-lovers. —Sandra Dallas, author of Tallgrass and The Quilt That Walked to Golden

Quilting Makes the Quilt Quilting Makes the QuiltAmazon Review: I purchased this book as a companion book to "The Fabric Makes the Quilt" by Roberta Horton. Here are two quilters and one believes fabric makes the quilt, and the other believes the quilting design makes the quilt. I think they are both right! Having both these books for comparison--gave me quite a visual lesson in quilting! What is truly unique about Lee Cleland's book is that she photographs a quilt and shows you how it looks with different quilting patterns. She does this with twelve quilts and it makes you truly consider how you will quilt your design. Truly the quilting is itself a design element and after studying this book--you will never make the beginner's mistake of considering the quilting pattern an afterthought. The color photos in this book are clear and well thought out. There is a pull out quilting paper in the back of the book to practice some of Lee's patterns.

Radiant Star Radiant StarAmazon Review: This "quilt in a day" book is definitely a misnomer - it is NOT a "quilt in a day". It will take you quite a bit of time and patience to make this quilt, but the rewards are worth it. My first attempt turned out poorly because I inadvertently stretched the bias while pressing the seams. I also learned to improve my pressing skills while trying to keep this aligned and straight! My second attempt turned out much better.
This earlier published book does not have the same degree of clarity in the directions as compared to Ms Burns' other, later books. Also no color pictures. But the directions are understandable. Read it several times and practice on inexpensive fabrics (e.g., muslins) before going at it with your expensive collections. A lovely quilt! P. Wales | Eleanor Burns |

Round About Quilts Round About QuiltsAmazon Review: For those of you looking for something different, this book could be worth considering. You do however, require a special 9 degree wedge ruler to complete these quilts. There are 9 patterns in the book, most of which are medallion-style quilts. There are 2 colour combinations shown of each pattern. These are not traditional quilts but certainly interesting. I don't know that I would recommend them to a beginner unless they were quite an experienced sewer. | J. Michelle Watts |
Royal Stars Royal StarsAmazon Review: I first got this book about 13 years ago. I think it has gone in and out of print a few times, but it is definitely a keeper. I find myself pulling it off my shelf for inspiration or just to browse through quite often.
The first half of the book is a photo of each of the 50 quilts, each one a large star designed for each of the 50 states. The second half is the pattern for each state's star.
The author assumes some knowledge of quilt making; be aware this is a book of patterns, not a "learn how to quilt" book.
I loved that each pattern was so unique, and you could see each pattern made up as a full-size bed quilt. Sometimes the finished quilt looked different from the pattern because of color placement, but it showed more options that way.
I have made two quilts from this book, the Royal Star of Nevada and Kansas. They look great! | House of White Birches |

Small Quilts, The Vanessa-Ann Collection Small Quilts, The Vanessa-Ann CollectionAmazon Review: I checked this out from a public library years ago and then had a hard time locating it to purchase for myself. I love the book, pictures and full-size templates. The quilt color schemes are bright and yet traditional. Wonderful quilt ideas to give as gifts---as most are not full bed size. 2nd Review: I have really enjoyed using this book. It has several patterns that I have made. Some of the patterns are hearts, trees, flowers, Christmas patterns, friendship wreath, and Irish Christmas. The small quilts can be used for all types of thing. A great buy. | Oxmoor House |
Smashing Sets Smashing SetsHundreds of ideas for achieving simple but unexpected designs and easy piecing are presented in a book that offers new approaches to arranging quilt blocks. Some of the quilts may look complex, but they are all based on simple design principles and use only straight-line piecing. Thirty-six quilts-with layouts for making sixteen of them-are shown. Each is made with techniques that can be applied to any quilt that uses individual blocks. Amazon Review: Once you've put lots of time and effort into piecing traditional quilt blocks, you can assemble them in the traditional way--or you can take a more adventurous approach for a change of pace. Margaret J. Miller's Smashing Sets: Exciting Ways to Arrange Quilt Blocks offers lovely color photos of about three dozen innovative quilts, derived from an assortment of conventional blocks. But that's where tradition gets left behind: accented with unexpected fabrics and assembled in surprising arrangements, these blocks come together in exciting quilts. The complex designs belie the fact that they are relatively easy to assemble, because they all employ only straight-line piecing. Good directions and extensive diagrams explain the piecing process and demystify template-making. Gridded drawings of 16 of the book's featured quilts, accompanied by design and piecing notes, allow readers to re-create some of Miller's imaginative designs, and her advice on fabric choices, design principles, and pattern variations helps quilters to develop their own "smashing sets." --Amy Handy | Margaret Miller |
